FAQs

Feed Efficiency is an add-on service for AfiCollar customers. It allows dairies to transition from milk production-centric to feed efficiency-based herd management, and accurately calculate and increase farm profitability.

AfiCollar Feed Efficiency accurately identifies the feed intake of each cow and references the animal's production data (i.e. EnCM) to precisely calculate her feed efficiency. It also provides a comprehensive view of income over feed per cow in the herd.

Farms must have AfiCollar configurations and MPC milk meters. AfiLab is recommended.
Note: AfiLab improves the accuracy of income over feed calculations by providing continuous measurements of fat and protein, rather than relying on occasional or monthly samples.

Feed Efficiency data has exciting potential for making breeding and culling decisions. Users can identify the least profitable cows to cull and pinpoint when cows hit their break-even point and are no longer profitable members of the herd. In addition, users can select the most efficient and profitable cows to breed.

Research has confirmed that highly feed-efficient cows produce less methane per milk production than low feed-efficient cows. Breeding based on feed efficiency helps dairies reduce emissions while lowering feed requirements.

Our research team worked extensively on research dairies around the world to develop an algorithm for Dry Matter Intake (DMI) measurements using the AfiCollar and data collected from our AfiFarm software.

This service includes regular meetings with Afimilk farm management specialists who work to help users understand and leverage the data in order to improve farm efficiency and profitability.

Culling less profitable animals has an immediate and straightforward impact on improving the profitability of your farm. Improving feed efficiency through breeding decisions is a long-term strategy that will guide the profitable future of your herd.
